$101 million in US aid for Pakistan sought by Biden administration

The Biden administration has requested $101 million in aid for Pakistan to combat terrorism, support economic reforms, and provide debt relief, US Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia, Donald Lu, announced on Tuesday.

Speaking before a subcommittee of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Lu emphasized that the help aimed to stabilize Pakistan’s economy while also promoting democracy and human rights.

Despite receiving a 37-month International Monetary Fund (IMF) plan, Pakistan is still experiencing financial difficulties.

Lu, who was previously accused by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan of being involved in the overthrow of his administration, indicated that the monies will also be used to encourage economic change.

The financial support aims to build on the recent IMF accord, which boosted agricultural income taxes in order to lower the recurring deficit.

The IMF agreement sets a lofty goal, with the highest effective tax rate potentially climbing to 45% from the current 15% beginning in 2025. Brokerage company JS Global described the action as “unprecedented.”

In his evidence, Lu highlighted worry over the rights of women and minority groups in Afghanistan, emphasizing that normalization of ties with the Taliban regime is contingent on the respect for Afghan citizens’ rights.

He called for the liberation of all American detainees detained by the Taliban.

Since the United States’ exit from Afghanistan in August 2021, it has supplied approximately $17.9 billion in aid to the country, maintaining its status as the leading donor.
