At least 41 dead in fire at building housing workers in Kuwait

Authorities in Kuwait report that a fire that started in a building housing workers claimed the lives of at least 41 persons.

Numerous individuals were also injured in the early-morning fire in the southern Mangaf district on Wednesday, according to the Health Ministry. Although there are many foreign laborers living in the region, the nationality of the victims was not immediately known.

During a visit to the location, Sheikh Fahad al-Yousuf al-Sabah, the Deputy Prime Minister, gave the order to arrest the building’s owner.

Sheikh Fahad, who also serves as head of the defense and interior ministries, said, “Unfortunately, these matters are caused by the greed of real estate owners.”

Authorities reported that the fire was under control and that they were looking into its source.

“Workers were housed in the building where the fire occurred, and there were a lot of workers there. Although many people died from smoke inhalation from the fire, dozens of people were saved, a senior police officer said state TV.

Without mentioning the nature of the workers’ jobs or places of origin, he declared, “We always alert and warn against” packing too many people into housing units.
