Starmer ‘very interested’ in Italy’s plan to process asylum claims in Albania, Meloni says – video

The British prime minister, Keir Starmer, and the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, said at a news conference in Rome on Monday that they would cooperate on migration and security. Starmer’s meeting with Meloni, after trips to Berlin, Paris and Dublin since he won the UK general election in July, was part of his attempt to improve ties with the EU, in part to increase coordination on tackling migration. Starmer has scrapped the previous government’s contentious plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda for processing, but has not altogether ruled out processing asylum claims offshore

Meloni states in the video that Starmer is “very interested” in Italy’s proposal to handle refugee requests in Albania.

At a press conference in Rome on Monday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced their cooperation on immigration and security. Following flights to Berlin, Paris, and Dublin following his victory in the UK general election in July, Starmer spoke with Meloni as part of his efforts to strengthen connections with the EU, partly in order to boost coordination on addressing migration.

Starmer has abandoned the controversial plan of the previous government to process asylum seekers in Rwanda, but he hasn’t completely ruled out processing asylum requests elsewhere.
