After power subsidy, Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz launches new interest-free housing scheme

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday launched the provincial government’s Apna Chhat Apna Ghar (our roof, our house) housing scheme, less than a week after her government announced plans for an electricity subsidy in Punjab that has roiled coalition allies.

During a ceremony in Lahore, the chief minister announced that owners of 1-5 marlas of land in urban areas and 1-10 marlas in rural regions would receive interest-free loans of up to Rs1.5 million from the Punjab government to build houses.

“For the first three months, landowners will not pay one paisa,” the chief minister stated.

“There is no place like home.” Those who have their own homes and roofs have no idea what it’s like to be homeless.”

PML-N President Nawaz Sharif announced on Friday a Rs14-per-unit cut in consumer rates for August and September for those who use 200 to 500 units per month. The action, which was restricted to Punjab, sparked resentment among the PPP-led Sindh administration, which is an ally of the PML-N government at the Centre.

The chief minister described the loan’s structure, which would be repaid over seven years.

“There is no need to pay for the first three months,” the CM stated, adding, “Those who take the loans will have to pay a maximum monthly instalment of Rs14,000.”

I maintained the payments at Rs14,000 since parents need to set up a monthly budget, pay their children’s school fees, utility bills, and buy food and medicine,” she explained.

CM Maryam also mentioned lower power prices for users consuming between 200 and 500 units per month in August and September, emphasizing her administration’s commitment to provide assistance to Punjab residents.

She also stated that there were no hidden charges or expenditures in her arrangement. “This is why we didn’t involve banks,” Maryam stated. “We wanted to avoid hidden costs.”

The chief minister explained how interested people might apply for the plan, saying, “You can submit an online application through the PITB portal. For those who aren’t as tech-savvy, we’ve provided a number: 080009100.

“Call and you will receive information on the scheme from your local DC office,” she added, adding that she plans to replicate this system in all major cities in Punjab.

The chief minister detailed the houses being built, noting that each house in the program will include two bedrooms, a TV lounge, a bathroom, and a kitchen “of a decent size”.

“Even the poor have self-respect, we need to get this right because you only build a house once,” she told the crowd.

The chief minister went on to say that her administration will expand this initiative across Punjab in five years so that individuals in need of housing “can get them.”
