Dar says Gen Faiz Hameed apologised to him for ‘excesses’

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday revealed that former spymaster Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, who is currently facing court martial proceedings, had apologised to him for subjecting him to victimisation.

Mr Dar described the arrest of the former ISI commander as a miracle, saying, “I am one of Faiz Hameed’s victims.” However, he said that the retired general had apologized for his “excesses”.

Mr Dar did not elaborate on the abuses attributed to the former spymaster.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Gen Faiz and three other retired officers were arrested for reportedly harassing the proprietor of a private housing society in the federal capital.

On Gen Faiz’s arrest, Mr Dar stated that such a development had occurred for the first time in the country’s history, and that the arrest had finally put a stop to a project that began in 2011.

In a statement, Mr Dar, who also serves as foreign minister, stated that the PTI dharna in 2014 was unsuccessful but had a negative impact on the country’s economy.

Following the disclosure of the Panama Papers, the Supreme Court banned both Mr Dar and Nawaz Sharif from public office in July 2017.

In September 2017, a NAB court accused Mr Dar in the Panama Papers corruption case for possessing riches above his known sources of income, but in October of same year, he became unwell while in Saudi Arabia and flew to the United Kingdom for treatment.

Mr Dar was labeled a proclaimed offender by an accountability court in December 2017, after failing to appear in court on many occasions.

Mr Dar was named minister of finance in September 2022, following a government transition.

In April of this year, he was appointed deputy prime minister.

Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan informed the media that Gen Faiz’s detention was an internal army affair into which he and others should not intervene.
