Earthquake strikes off Japan’s coast and triggers tsunami warning

A large earthquake struck off Japan’s southern coast on Thursday, prompting a tsunami warning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), although there were no early reports of serious damage.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and occurred off the eastern coast of Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu at a depth of around 30 kilometers (18.6 miles).

According to the agency, tsunami waves of up to 50 centimeters (1.6ft) were observed along areas of Kyushu’s southern shore and the adjoining island of Shikoku approximately half an hour after the quake.

The quake was particularly powerful in Nichinan city and surrounding parts of Miyazaki prefecture on Kyushu.

Seismologists convened an emergency conference to determine whether the quake had impacted the adjacent Nankai trough, the source of previous disastrous earthquakes.

Nuclear plant operators on Kyushu and Shikoku said they were inspecting the facilities to determine if they had been damaged. Earthquakes in nuclear power plant locations have been a major source of worry since the Fukushima nuclear accident, which was caused by a large earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

According to Japan’s NHK public television, there have been reports of smashed glass at Miyazaki Airport, which is near the epicenter.

Japan is located on the Pacific “ring of fire,” a belt of seismic faults that encircles the Pacific Ocean, and is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries. On January 1, an earthquake struck Japan’s north-central area of Noto, killing more than 240 people.
