Endowment fund established to support higher education of underprivileged students: PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said that the government had established the Pakistan Education Endowment Fund to support children from low-income families to obtain higher education.

The declaration comes months after Prime Minister Shehbaz proclaimed an education emergency in the country, vowing to enroll over 26 million out-of-school youngsters.

According to Abdullah A. Fadil, the representative for the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in Pakistan, more than 70% of Pakistani children aged 10 are unable to read or interpret text.

In a meeting with Oxford Union President Israr Khan Kakar at the PM House today, the prime minister said that a 20 percent quota will be set aside for Balochistan’s youth under the newly constituted fund.

The premier praised Kakar for winning the Oxford Union election in June, making him the third Pakistani and the first from Balochistan to occupy this distinguished post.

The Oxford Union, formed in 1823, is one of the oldest and most prestigious debating societies in the world.

PM Shehbaz expressed his hope that young people like himself will continue to make Pakistan proud.

“Winning scholarship throughout the academic career and then his election as president of a great body like Oxford Union by a youngster coming from a backward area of Balochistan is a matter of pride,” the prime minister pointed out.

Inviting him to speak at the Oxford Union, Kakar congratulated the prime minister and his government for their efforts to empower young people and provide them with equitable chances.

“All of the youth like me, are resolved to offer all-out services for Pakistan’s progress and prosperity,” Kakar stated.
