Heavy rain likely to lash Karachi from Thursday

KARACHI:

As the metropolis struggles with the extreme heat, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) stated on Wednesday that rain showers and thunderstorms are predicted to hit Karachi on Thursday and Friday.

The Met Office has forecasted storms to occur ahead of the thundershowers. In addition, rain is predicted during the afternoon or evening in the city’s suburbs.

The Met Office said on Wednesday that while the temperature remained hot and muggy generally, there was also a dust storm in several parts of the city center.

Rain, thunderstorm expected in Karachi today: PMD

Karachi on high alert for heat wave starting tomorrow

The Met Office had forecast a day earlier that today (Wednesday) would see isolated, heavy rainfall in several areas of Sindh, including Karachi.

The PMD forecasted a dust-thunderstorm or rain with sporadic heavy rainfall in some areas of Sindh province from June 26 to July 1 in a statement on Tuesday.

Moreover, the Met office reported that moist currents from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are reaching southern and eastern portions of the nation and are anticipated to enter higher areas from Thursday, as thundershowers with gusty winds are making their way in parts of Sindh and other provinces.

Since the last few years, Karachi has been facing dangerous weather especially during summers in the form of heat waves combined with no cool air in the atmosphere.

The increasing urbanisation and lack of green cover in the city has deeply impacted its entire climate sphere. Experts on climate change and environmental issues have called the city a concrete jungle.

As many ancient trees have been chopped down for the building of estates, this has led to the rising temperatures and deaths from heatstroke.
