The US State Department has said that the detention of former prime minister Imran Khan is an internal matter for Pakistan

At a recent press conference, Vedant Patel, the State Department’s Principal Deputy Spokesperson, discussed a range of issues pertaining to Pakistan and Afghanistan. This comment was a part of a larger conversation that included these issues.

In response to the United Nations arbitrary detention committee’s claim that Khan’s imprisonment was unlawful, Patel stated that the United States could not provide any further information on the subject and instead referred the matter to the UN for clarity.

The former prime minister’s incarceration is arbitrary and against international law, a UN human rights working committee emphasized yesterday, adding that the lawmaker should be freed right now.

It also claimed “widespread fraud on election day, stealing dozens of parliamentary seats.”

The department also reaffirmed its demand that Pakistan uphold fundamental freedoms and human rights, such as the freedom of religion, association, speech, and peaceful assembly.

He stated, “We implore the Pakistani government to uphold fundamental freedoms and human rights, including the freedom of expression, association, peaceful assembly, and religion.”

In response to a query concerning the legitimacy of Pakistani elections and claims of widespread manipulation, Patel stated that the US was still focused on Pakistani elections.

Yes, we have kept bringing up this issue with our Pakistani partners. We still keep our attention focused on that.
