The unproven story, published on Monday by the US magazine Axios, comes as worries of a regional conflict in the Middle East grow. Iran and Hezbollah have promised retaliation for the assassination of Hamas and Hezbollah officials last week.

According to three anonymous sources, Blinken informed G7 peers during a conference call that Iran and Hezbollah may begin an attack on Israel as early as Monday.

According to Axios, “the sources said Blinken stressed that the US believes Iran and Hezbollah will both retaliate,” adding that Washington “doesn’t know the exact timing of the attacks” or what shape they will take.

Blinken informed his G7 colleague that the US aims to prevent the escalation by urging Iran and Hezbollah to restrict their assaults and any Israeli retaliation. He urged the other foreign ministers to join the effort by putting diplomatic pressure on the three.

The G7, which also includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, issued a statement on Monday expressing “deep concern over the heightened level of tension in the Middle East” and urging restraint on all sides, emphasizing that “no country or nation stands to benefit from a further escalation.”
