Middle East Alert For Indians As Iran-Israel Tensions Escalate

New Delhi: Tensions in the Middle East have risen as Iran and its allies threatened vengeance for the assassination of key Hamas and Hezbollah figures.
Israel assassinated Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr in Beirut on Tuesday, claiming it was in reaction to fatal missile firing last week on the disputed Golan Heights.

Hours later, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was slain in Tehran, while Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur perished in a strike in Lebanon last month.

The assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah commanders are the most recent of numerous major episodes that have heightened regional tensions throughout the Gaza conflict, which has drawn in Iran-backed forces from Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen.

This escalation has caused India and other countries to exercise prudence in the area.

Following the escalation of regional tensions, Indian nationals in Israel have been advised to remain attentive and observe safety precautions.

The caution to Indian people in Israel comes a day after the Indian Embassy in Beirut strongly recommended Indian nationals not to travel to Lebanon till further notice. It also suggested they leave Lebanon.

Air India canceled flights to and from Israel’s Tel Aviv yesterday, with immediate effect till August 8.

US President Joe Biden said late Thursday that he was “very concerned” about escalating tensions in the area, and that the execution of Haniyeh had “not helped” matters.

According to Hezbollah sources, Iranian officials met in Tehran on Wednesday with leaders of the so-called “axis of resistance,” a loose alliance of Tehran-backed anti-Israeli factions, to decide their future measures.

“Two scenarios were discussed: a simultaneous response from Iran and its allies or a staggered response from each party,” said a person informed on the discussion, who asked to remain anonymous to discuss sensitive issues.

Israel, which claimed Shukr’s killing was in reaction to fatal missile fire on the seized Golan Heights last week, warned its foes that they would “pay a very high price” for any “aggression”.

“Israel is at a very high level of preparation for any scenario, both defensive and offensive,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated.
