Monsoon rains claim 84 lives in Punjab

The ongoing monsoon rains in Punjab have left a grim toll, with 84 people dead, 224 injured, and 245 homes damaged, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

According to a PDMA representative, the fatalities were mostly caused by lightning strikes, electrocution, and the collapse of mud dwellings and old buildings.

The torrential rains also killed 44 cattle, and 100 dwellings were entirely demolished, with another 145 partially damaged. Financial aid is being offered to affected families, and the injured will get medical treatment.

With further rain expected in the coming 24 hours, flash flood warnings have been issued for southern Punjab, notably in the Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, and Bahawalpur divisions.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia stated that the situation is being continuously watched around the clock, with plans in place for any emergencies.

Water levels in critical rivers and dams continue to be a source of worry. Tarbela, Kalabagh, and Chashma have experienced low-level flooding in the Indus River, with Taunsa seeing medium-level flooding. However, the Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Jhelum rivers remain at normal flow rates.

Mangla Dam is now at 70% capacity, whereas Tarbela Dam is practically full (99%). Indian dams on the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers have reported water levels of 54% capacity.

The PDMA recommends citizens to take precautions during the rainy season. People are urged to avoid staying in susceptible buildings and to limit their travel during inclement weather.

Citizens should keep their distance from electricity wires and poles. For immediate assistance, call the PDMA helpline at 1129.
