Muhammad Yunus returns to Bangladesh to lead interim government

Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus has returned to Bangladesh to lead an interim administration, following weeks of student-led demonstrations that drove Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to quit and escape to India.

“It’s good to be back home,” remarked the 84-year-old after landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital, Dhaka, on Thursday after flying from Paris through Dubai.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed Yunus to lead an interim administration, meeting a key demand of the student protest leaders.

Yunus was scheduled to meet with the president and army leader General Waker-Uz-Zaman before an oath-taking ceremony at 8.30pm (14:30 GMT), during which he is anticipated to reveal his new Cabinet.

“Today is a glorious day for us,” Yunus told journalists at the airport. “Bangladesh has declared a new triumph day. Bangladesh has gained a second independence.

Yunus’ primary goal was to organize elections as quickly as possible, according to Al Jazeera’s Tanvir Chowdhury, reporting from Dhaka. The vote should take place 90 days after the country’s Parliament was dissolved on Tuesday.

“[He] himself has said he doesn’t want to be a long-term caretaker government chief,” a source claimed.
