Japan now boasts the world’s oldest population, according to the United Nations.
The organization expects that its research will throw light on the rising issue of the country’s elderly population living and dying alone.

According to National Police Agency data from the first half of 2024, a total of 37,227 persons living alone were discovered dead at home, with those 65 and older accounting for more than 70%.
While an estimated 40% of those who died alone at home were discovered within a day, the police investigation revealed that roughly 3,939 remains were discovered more than a month after death, with 130 lying undiscovered for at least a year until discovery.
The dataset’s largest category, accounting for 7,498 of the remains identified, was 85-year-olds and above, followed by 75-79-year-olds (5,920). People aged 70 to 74 accounted for 5,635 of the corpses discovered.

According to Japanese public television network NHK, the police agency will present its findings to a government committee investigating unattended fatalities.
Earlier this year, the Japanese National Institute of Population and Social Security Research predicted that the number of senior individuals (aged 65 and over) living alone will reach 10.8 million by 2050.
The total number of single-person homes is expected to reach 23.3 million in the same year.
In April, the Japanese government submitted a measure to address the country’s decades-long loneliness and isolation problem, which is exacerbated by the country’s ageing population.

Japan has long attempted to address its ageing and falling population, but the transition is proving increasingly difficult to manage.
