New Toshakhana case: Court grants Imran, Bushra’s 8-day physical remand

ISLAMABAD – On the basis of the NAB’s appeal in the recent Toshakhana reference case, an accountability court on Sunday granted an eight-day physical remand of PTI founding chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan, along with his spouse Bushra Bibi. On July 22, the court has mandated their return. The couple was cleared in the iddat case, and the order was issued less than a day later. But in a fresh Toshakhana referral, the National Accountability Bureau detained them, postponing their release.

Extra Meetings A day earlier, Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka overturned the couple’s conviction in the iddat case, where they had been sentenced to seven years in jail and a Rs. 500,000 fine apiece.

A team of anti-corruption watchdogs led by Deputy Director Mohsin Haroon, however, detained the couple from the Adiala jail shortly after the ruling overturning their sentence. The new reference concerned their suspected “misuse of power for acquiring Toshakhana gifts.”

The PTI was anticipating the release of its founder following the party’s significant legal win when a 13-member Supreme Court panel ruled that the party qualified for the allotment of reserved seats.

Judge Muhammad Ali Warraich of the Accountability Court issued two orders on Sunday: first, that the NAB question the two suspects in Adiala jail; second, that they produce themselves before the court on July 22.

Speaking to the media, Khan’s attorney Zaheer Abbas Chaudhary stated that the NAB has asked for the erstwhile ruling couple to be physically remanded for a period of 14 days. Chaudhary stated that they were preoccupied with the £190 million reference and that they were against the physical remand.

The attorney stated that the former premier and his spouse were unlawfully detained and that the Supreme Court was now considering their application for a bond.

Following his sentencing in the Toshakhana criminal case and subsequent sentencing in other instances in front of the elections scheduled for February 8, Khan has been detained since August of last year.

On May 9, there were cases lodged in Lahore that led to Imran Khan’s detention. In the jail, a 12-person Lahore police squad looked into him, according to sources quoted by Geo News.

Eleven detective inspectors comprised the police unit under the command of DSP Ahmed Usman. The PTI founder was questioned by the team over the events of May 9 and 10, which included the attack cases at Shadman police station, Jinnah House, and Askari Tower, regarding digital evidence and statements from the accused who had been apprehended. The PTI founder is scheduled to appear via video connection in Lahore’s anti-terrorism court on Monday. A remand request will be made in order to continue the investigation into the Jinnah House attack. According to police sources, Imran Khan was the subject of 16 cases in all, four of which had him on bond.
