Patchy rain does little to cool down sweaty Karachiites

KARACHI: Some parts of the city received light to moderate rains on Friday, though hot and humid weather remained mostly unaffected for the third consecutive day.

After a day of exceptionally hot and humid weather, a light shower provided some comfort to locals.

However, meteorological department authorities said that despite the rainfall, humidity levels remained essentially unchanged, making the weather conditions very hot.

The city sizzled at 38.5 degrees Celsius with 79% humidity, raising the ‘feels-like’ temperature to 47°C.

The cloudy circumstances eventually led to rain, primarily in the suburbs and east region.

The greatest rainfall count was reported at University Road (14.8 mm), while all other localities got single-digit rainfall totals.

“Thunderstorm cells” erupted on the outskirts, initially hitting Gadap Town and then causing showers in Bahria Town, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Motorway M9, Scheme 33, Surjani Town, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, North Nazimabad, Hasan Square, Essa Nagri, PIB Colony, and Bahadurabad.

‘Current conditions to prevail for a day or two’

According to the Met Office’s weather prediction, monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are infiltrating southern sections of the nation, while a westerly wave is hitting the higher regions. Heavy rains are also forecast in isolated areas of lower Sindh around this time, according to the report.

Dr Sardar Sarfaraz, the chief meteorologist of Pakistan Meteorological Department, stated that the current weather conditions are likely to last for another day or two, with mild to moderate rain in sections of the city.

The sea breezes, he continued, are obstructed by a low pressure region, which can cause the ‘feels-like’ temperature to rise significantly. He stated the situation will progressively improve if sea breezes returned to some extent from July 22.

The influence of the low pressure region that had hindered the sea breezes will diminish.

The city, which had seen more than 30 deaths attributed to heatstroke in the previous two days, saw no deaths from terrible weather on Friday.

However, the health authorities stated that during the day, 36 persons who had “suffered heatstroke” were transported to various hospitals in the city and were all discharged after receiving sufficient medical attention.
