Press Council wants KP CM to apologise over remarks

ISLAMABAD: The Press Council of Pakistan (PCP), the print media regulator, has asked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister to tender an apology for using inappropriate language against journalists at a public meeting held in Tarnol.

PCP Chairman Arshad Jadoon issued a statement in response to KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s inappropriate remarks about journalists at a public meeting in Tarnol. Jadoon stated that Gandapur made “irresponsible and inappropriate remarks concerning the journalist community, with particular reference to women journalists.” These remarks, delivered during his address on September 8, are both insulting and inappropriate.

“As the province’s chief executive, you are required to communicate with civility and respect. The use of aggressive language not only diminishes the dignity of your job, but also sets a negative example for KP people,” the PCP stated.

It referenced Section 8 of the PCP Ordinance, which states that “the council shall also act as a shield to the freedom of the press.” It may receive a complaint from a publication, a journalist, or any organization or individual affected.”

The PCP then released a statement requesting that Mr Gandapur stop using vulgar and reckless language in relation to journalists, particularly women.

The directive further stated that Mr Gandapur must submit a formal apology within 15 days after receiving this notification.
