PTI’s Barrister Gohar confident of ‘clean sweep’ in Islamabad municipal elections

ISLAMABAD:Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan has announced that the party will participate in the upcoming municipal elections in Islamabad and is confident of a “clean sweep”.

Speaking to the media outside the Election Commission Pakistan (ECP) on Monday, Gohar encouraged the party’s candidates to file nomination papers in big numbers for the municipal elections.

He voiced confidence in the PTI’s ability to win decisively.

Gohar expressed unhappiness with a recent Supreme Court judgment involving four seats, adding, “Unfortunately, our concerns were not heard.” Our lawful votes were rejected, and there was no prior request for a recount in NA-79. We hope that the Election Commission will address our concerns.

Last week, on August 13, the Supreme Court overturned a Lahore High Court (LHC) verdict that allowed a recount of votes in three National Assembly and one Punjab Assembly constituencies requested by the governing PML-N’s runner-up candidates.

The PML-N’s runner-up candidates applied to the ECP for a vote recount, which the ECP eventually accepted.

The PTI-backed candidates contested the verdict at the LHC, which approved the returning candidates’ writ petitions and overturned the ECP ruling.

This LHC decision was subsequently challenged in the Supreme Court by a three-member panel chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJ) Qazi Faez Isa and including Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, who heard the case.

The PTI chairman also criticized the recent reduction in energy costs in Punjab, calling it “insufficient.”

He stated: “Electricity prices should be reduced for everyone, not just for a couple of months, but on a permanent basis” .

“The current relief is being provided by diverting funds from development projects, which is not lowering electricity prices in the long run.”
