What happened in Hathras?

Tuesday saw a sizable gathering of 250,000 followers of spiritual guide Suraj Pal, popularly known as Bhole Baba, for a satsang, or prayer assembly, in a Hathras village. A field used as the main location for the prayer meeting had been opened to about 80,000 of them.

The prayer gathering was being held under a homemade tent on top of some muddy ground, and a large number of people had assembled inside.

Bhole belongs to the Dalit community, which is the lowest caste in India. Many of his supporters are impoverished or female, and many belong to the so-called “lower castes.”

After the prayer service, there was pandemonium when Bhole exited the platform and headed out of the tent to get into his car.

A police report filed later stated that a large number of individuals raced out of the tent towards his automobile, trampling each other, in an attempt to touch his feet or the ground he had stepped on.

The crush claimed several lives as many individuals suffocated to death. A few also landed in a nearby mud field and was crushed there.
